Madi Jobarteh, a prominent Gambian activist, has been summoned for questioning by police.
Jobarteh who campaigned on various societal and human rights issues will be at the Kairaba Police Station, Fajara, this afternoon to be question about some remarks he made to the media last Saturday whilst protesting outside the American Embassy against the killings and inhuman treatment of black people in US.
Disclosing the news to his followers on Facebook, Jobarteh wrote: “Kairaba Police Station has ‘invited’ me for “questioning” today at 3pm, about the interview I gave to the media at the Black Lives Matter protest on Saturday.
I shall respond to the call and continue to hold the state accountable & express my opinion as a citizen of The Gambia.”
No Gambian citizens should be intimidated by security forces. This Administration is turning armed thugs against innocent citizens who have every right to demand their government be responsive and accountable.
This “ invite” is nothing but harassment and abuse of power by the government. Gambians all over the world must speak loudly and clearly against tyranny. This is no different than what YJ was doing.
This is a national disgrace and ALL those passively or actively involved are enemies of Gambia.
Leave Madi alone. Go do your jobs.
