No Native Dermatologist In The Gambia

The Gambia currently has no native dermatologist, JollofNews can report.

The situation has apparently piled an unsustainable pressure on the skin clinic at the country’s main referral hospital.

The dermatology unit of Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) is the only public skin clinic in The Gambia, seeing more than 50 patients a day.

But the unit has only one Cuban dermatologist.

“He’s overworked. He bends over backwards to give care to his patients but could not just keep up with the increasing patient numbers,” a source told JollofNews.

Meanwhile, visiting dermatologists have been reportedly making efforts to help plug the country’s dermatology gap.

“My child was given care by a Nigerian lady, whom I later learned, is a professor in dermatology,” mother of a child, suffering irritations and inflammation, informed this medium.

EFSTH dermatology unit is the only public skin clinic in The Gambia.

The country’s main referral hospital’s pharmacies have also been depleted of skin care medicines, JollofNews confirmed.
