UDP Expresses ‘Extreme’ Concern Over Independence Stadium

Gambia’s main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) has voiced deep concern regarding the current state of Independence Stadium.

The UDP’s statement echoes the growing frustration among Gambians, particularly the national football team, the Scorpions, and their supporters, over the stadium’s ongoing shortcomings.

Despite significant investments—running into millions of dalasis—meant to revamp the facility, the stadium continues to fall short of CAF and FIFA standards.

This deficiency has deprived the Scorpions of the opportunity to play crucial home matches on Gambian soil.

The UDP’s criticism extends to what it deems wasteful spending, particularly at a time when the nation is grappling with high youth unemployment and rising costs of living.

The party is urging for transparency, accountability, and potential sanctions for those responsible for these setbacks, emphasising that Gambians deserve honest answers and leadership that delivers on their needs and aspirations.
