Gambia’s Halifa Sallah To Lead PDOIS In Dec. Poll

Gambia(JollofNews) – Halifa Sallah, a renowned Gambian sociologist and politician has been nominated to lead the opposition People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) in this year’s presidential election.

Mr Sallah, 63, who led the PDOIS in the 2006 general in which he secured 6 per cent of the general vote was elected by the party’s central committee on Tuesday. He will be unvieled to party members at a political rally next month.
Born in Serrekunda, Mr Sallah was leader of the opposition in the Gambia’s National Assembly and a member of the pan-African parliament in Addis Ababa.
The Gambia will hold presidential elections in December 2016, with legislative and local polls to follow in April 2017 and April 2018.
The tiny West African nation of less than two million people has been ruled by Yahya Jammeh since 1994, when the then 29-year-old seized power in a bloodless coup.
