Military Intervention Is Not The Solution To Gambia’s Political Standoff

SA Jarjou

(JollofNews) – The future of the Gambia lies on us Gambians that one have to acknowledge, no one will come from nowhere to make the Gambia a better place for us. Gambians have to be very careful in consuming the negative ideas being ejected to us.  The Gambia is known for its peace for centuries in which some are not satisfied with it. Why? Because they are enemies of peace.

The fiascos of intervention in Afghanistan and Iraq discredited the notion of humanitarian militarism. The recent war in Libya has, however, put wind back into the sails of those who advocate military intervention in pursuit of liberal or humanitarian objectives. Calls for military action in Syria are getting louder, and Iran is also increasingly being viewed through the crosshairs.

Are we today on the verge of a new round of foreign intervention? A sober debate over military intervention might benefit from a brief look back into history. After nearly two centuries of bloodshed, the Treaty of Westphalia ended the nearly continuous series of wars involving the Holy Roman Empire, France, Spain, Sweden, the United Netherlands and several European city-states. Crucial to the treaty was the notion of sovereignty: states could no longer legitimately meddle in the internal affairs of other states.

We are seriously concerned over the trend towards the normalization of military intervention into situations designated as humanitarian crises. The world must not be allowed to return to the situation before 1940, when international law was little more than ink on paper. The discontent of (parts of) a population in a given country cannot be used as an excuse to destabilize, attack or occupy weaker countries, thereby undermining the international legal order.
Humanitarian interventions are often defended under the premise that all else has been tried and failed. In reality, it is usually the Western powers that undermine a negotiated settlement, or fail to give negotiations a reasonable chance. This was the case in Kuwait (1990), in Somalia (1993) and in the former Yugoslavia (1996-1999).
It also holds true over the past decade. The South African president did not complain without reason to the UN Security Council, arguing that the African Union had been pushed aside in the search for a negotiated settlement in Libya. Moreover, the West continues to fuel conflict by arming, training and financing one (or more) of the conflicting parties. Also has demonstrated very well its dangers and capacity for catastrophic failure.

We cannot accept that the West compensates for its waning global power by using humanitarian military interventions as a cover for pursuing geostrategic interests. We can no longer look on passively as powerful economic interest groups set out to conquer the world “in our name.” We stand against the politics of intervention, even when it wraps itself in the cloak of humanitarianism. A wolf remains a wolf, even when dressed in sheep’s clothing. (Ludo De Brabander, 2012).

If military intervention the solution to the current political situation?

How many shall die?
How many shall make it to the refugee camps?
How many shall lose their business?
How many shall be homeless?
How many shall be raped?
How many shall commit suicide?
How many shall be separated from their families and loves ones?
How many shall migrate?
How many shall live in hunger?
how many shall take the gun to retaliate?
How many pregnancies shall be aborted?
How many shall be crying both day and night?
And how many of our resources shall be looted?

Oh the Gambia, Oh the Gambia
The land of peace, the land of humanity
The land of all race and the land of love
I was born and heard the name of the smiling cost of Africa
I tough I shall live and narrate the meaning to my son Zakir

What a situation we are experiencing
where each and every junction on the street are with soldiers with AK.47’s,
Oh the Gambia where are we heading to? Is this the Gambia we want to see?

I wish I could wake up not to see a Soldier with a gun
Oh you Mr.Gun I am not afraid of you but afraid of the person holding you. I pray to God to take your life today Mr.Gun

Oh, Mr.Gun, why are you a treat to mankind?
Why, do you want to take advantage?
Oh, Mr Gun why can’t we be friends,
to leave peacefully like family without harming one another?

Let me call the Angel of Peace,
Hello the Angel of Peace, where are you?
Are you not hearing the news of the current political situation in The Gambia?
Are you not informed about the issue?
Please be informed of it now the Angel of Peace.

Oh you the angel of peace come now and save us
come and guide us, come and saw us the way out
For the Gambia our home land!!

I may never be President of The Gambia, but at least I have earned unreserved rights to good governance by virtue of my citizenship and my law-abiding nature. I, hereby, do solemnly pledge to consistently and continually fight for this noble right of mine, along with those who care to join me.

Finally, at the end of the day, military intervention does nothing to resolve the underlying reasons for conflict. More often than not, conflict is the result of poverty or socio-economic

Inequality, which in turn has its origins in destabilizing agricultural, trade and debt policies emanating from Western dominated institutions. The resources wasted on military intervention might otherwise have sufficed to pursue policies aimed at social development, which might in turn have contributed to the prevention of violence.

    • SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES AND THE AGENTS OF DIVISION AMONG A PEACE LOVING NATION.

The Subliminal messages underlying some of the Hatchet pieces and or stories being transmitted to the Gambians need to tempered, if not eliminated in pursuit of Peace, Tranquility and Security for all Gambians. I don’t have the time of “beating around the bush” about the Insidious drum beat of the so called “Jola hegemony” in the Gambia. I like most Gambians who grew up in the rural areas in the Seventies before leaving for further education abroad through our own and farmer families effort, not government help of any kind, know better what drove us to excel. It was not because of the graciousness and generosity of the government in power. If we depended on that, we would be in the Gambia “crying Tribalist this, Jola hegemony that, Mandinka hegemony this … you get the point. In a “Hatchet job” on Yankuba Badjie put out by “The Kairo” News Outlet, his job or jobs while in America were ridiculed and made fun of. I am not sure what that was suppose to achieve? What’s the point? I know this Site cannot engage in What another News Outlet engages in. My point however, is that Hatred is taking over Objectivity and Professional Ethics of Journalism. Is it too much to ask for Commentators to be less invested in insidious and subliminal messages they are communicating about our the Jola as if the Jola are a Monolith and are guilty of all things that happened since the 1994 Coupe. What has ones job or jobs while abroad trying to make a living as long as it is a ligitimate and income generating endeavor, has to do with anything. Would the author of the piece on Yankuba Badjie, rather have Mr. Yankuba Badjie engage in what some of the “economic migrants” as he put it, easily take up. That is illegal activities such as drug dealing, credit card fraud, and ripping off anyone foolish enough to associate with them. These are the same folks who give a bad name to their country by their criminal and illegal activities abroad and then would have one believe that they’re Political refugees. They are more than willing to lower themselves to a toads’ level and sell their Country for a VISA, Work Permit or Green Card. The cocktail of Hatred and Tribalistic Subliminal Messages being telegraphed would come to hunt all Gambians, unless it is Checked and Purged out of the Public Spsce. A regular question I always ask is, how is it possible for a population of a tribe that is less than 10% of a country, where the “Supposedly Repressed” tribe is between 39% and 40% of the country’s population and other tribes comprising of between 29%, 30% and the rest between 12% and 13%, and the tribes are found in and at all levels of the government; “Control and Repress” the Said Tribe or population. Without such Tribes’ and Population’s Complicity and Participation in the Alleged Repression nothing can or would take place. I am not willing to deny that terrible things happened in the Gambia before and during the Current Political Dispensation. Wrongs were perpetrated by all Gambians of all tribes and regions. Yet, it is now becoming fashionable and almost acceptable in certain groups and people, to paint and brush all Jolas with one stroke, as being the tribe responsible for the Gambia under President Yaya Jammeh. If one intelligently follows this logic, you would have to say that the Mandinka are responsible for any and all events that happened in the Gambia during the 32 years of President David/Dauda Jawara’s regime. That would be rediculous. Yet men and women who normally would not allow hate to blind them, are now willing to lower their humanity and sense of decency to fit in the clamour for a “Pound of Flesh” from any and all Jolas, if they cannot get the “Pound of Flesh” from President Yaya Jammeh. What I don’t have, is the ability to rationalize and reason with those who would create or replace fact with fiction of who, when and what did happen in the Gambia and to Gambians during the 32 and 22 years of Misrule and MALFEASANCE. The Scapegoating of the Jola or Mandinka would only reinforce the Tribalist and Prejudicial Sectionalist feelings fueled by Political Hachet Men and Women with the help of their Opinion “PUSHERS”. Gambia is more the Sum total of One Tribe, Region or a group of people. We are our neighbors, brothers and sisters keepers.

Stop Peddling Subliminal Messages To The Gambia and Gambians. Like it or not, We are all in one Pond, the Gambia. Either we live and let live, or we engage in a National Collective Burial. The Choice is Ours, Not ECOWAS, Not Senegal.

      By Sidi N. Bojang.

      • Come on bro Sidi, Yankuba is occupying a sensitive and important national position. What smells so foul in it, an author writing to probe into the guy’s academic acquirements?

        • “Bourne”, my concern is the dissmissive and implied subliminal message and attitude apparent in the piece with reference to “economic migrant” allegation and the blanket statement that seem to devalue “an honest day’s work for a days wages”. My concern is that our inherited Colonial Administration Mentality that has not been fully understood or dissected and analysed before Devouring it Whole. That is, only those with degrees and extensive education, even if is the “wrong education” for the Country, should have responsible positions. Thus, in most African Elementary and High Schools and possibly in Colleges, technical skills of Typing and now Word Processing, Africa. Science, and Masonry and Carpentry were and are not Valued, nor introduced as a Core Curriculum. Even HOME Economics and Nursing are seen as a Female domain and still is in most African Elementary and High Schools. The paradox is, the same Africans and Gambians who raise their noses and upper lips back home in Africa and Gambia and refuse to engage in an honest and legal income generating endeavor of Babysitting, Farming and Janitorial work, leave their countries in Africa and the Gambia only to be employed as Babysitters, Farm workers, Restaurant Dish washers, Bus Boys, Taxi drivers, and Gate Keepers or Guards in America, Europe and other Destinations out of their Country and Africa. It is this destructive attitude and approach to Income generating endeavor, that has significantly contributed to the Underdeveloped of Africa and Gambia in particular. I am an Advanced degree holder, howecdr, I have worked as a Carpenter’s and Builders Assistant, Refurbished furniture, Pizza Hut and Amusement Park employee as a Student on the Work Study Program. I also worked as a Teaching Assistant for a Sociology Professor while studying for my Bachelor’s. I worked as a Research Assistant at an Adolescent Mental Health Center while studying for my Masters degree, as well as worked at the Lt. Governor’s office as a Practicum required experience for my Economic and Social Policy and Welfare Specialization. I am not of Mentality that one has to sit in an Air conditioned office to make a difference or contribute to the Nation if your birth. Furthermore, one does not accumulate as many degrees and titles to be of help to the Nation of your birth or Africa at large. Change is the one thing that is inevitable, and we must embrace it. However, we must do so with the full understanding that Change comes with Responsibility and Due Diligence in all Matters of National and Local Concern. Change demands Vigilance and a Healthy Doze of Constructive criticism of the Body Politics and especially those entrusted with the Affairs of State. To this end, I am requesting that a few significant and vital information about President Elect Adama Barrow: Which Real Estate School, College, or Entity did he graduate from? When did he enroll and what type of degree or Certificate did he receive? What Real Estate Property or Properties did Adama Barrow the President Elect Develop and when were they Developed? Which Real Estate Company did he Establish and when and what evidence is available for the alleged Reports that he is a “Businessman and a Property Developer”? The President Elect Adama Barrow and the Coalition Alliance Party Leadership, Owe it to the Nation and all Gambians to Make this information available to the Press and the Gambian Citizens. The Press and any honest GAMBIAN would have be less than patriotic and especially Derelict in their exercise of their Citizenship. Very few Gambians know much about President Elect Adama Barrow besides the Unsubstantiated or Unverified and Vetted Background of the Claims of his Qualifications and Business Creditials. We can do better, and the President Elect Adama Barrow and the Coalition Alliance Leadership must do better and Provide the Gambians this Partinent Alleged Biography of President Elect Adama Barrow. Least, we jump from the Boiling Pot into the Fire, All Honest, Concerned and Patriotic Gambians Cannot be Silent on the Above Salient Issues facing our Country, the Gambia. Secrets and Half Truths should not be allowed to govern the future Governance of the Gambia and Gambians.

          • Well articulated and noted Bro!!

          • I agree @Sidi, a man’s means of earning his daily bread should be respected whether abroad or a home but for Yankuba’s case, his name is in the epicenter of the present status quo in the Gambia with atrocities and serious human rights abuses to its records. He was a private Gambian citizen who went abroad in search of a better paid job to help his family, …that’s fine, but then he went back home later, to work as the director of the notorious Nia of the regime, known to be behind the disappearance, maiming, and killing of so many innocent Gambians. Talking of his past and present now, in his dangerous and menacing capacity, as apparent, is all he deserves from the ordinary Gambia in my point of view.
I would have defended Yankuba if he were indulged in farming upon returning home and his farms and assets were apprended unlawfully.

  2. Just leave the sycophants and those selfish Gambians in the diaspora whose only wish to return should merit any form of change of government even violent. Of course, they would never go home to fight!
Anyone who believes President Jammeh should be remove violently if all peace deals fail is only anointing uncalculable destruction of human life and properties. As Gambians we must sit right to the last second to discuss our differences. There is nothing unsurmountable. Only the wolves would vie for violence.
Our men-in-arms would never wait for ECOWAS invading forces to take the Gambia at the click of the finger. That would NEVER happen! That would be bloodbath.

    • Noted!!

    • stop blaming Gambians in the diaspora for dictator jammeh’s barbaric tribalistic behaviors . You sound like you couldn’t get a visa. How can you negotiate with a looooser . He lost step aside. Barrow won give him a chance to govern. Every peace loving Gambia voted for his excellency Barrow get over it. Any Gambia army personnel who is dumb enough to commit suicide for ignorant uneducated juju plastered all over smelly body jammeh, good luck you deserve what you catch which is a bullet come 19th. Yes I am willing to volunteer my life to join ecowas force to get rid of his funky ass

    • You dont sound peacefully, you sound violence.

    • Babu soli, In the honest manners why jammeh and his government allowed APRC supporters rally and march in the street of banjul on tuesday for the supreme court to act on his case? Why is he denying opposition supporter to express their allegiant to the president elect adama barrow? Is this a fair playing field? This is what jammeh demonstrate to the whole world that he has no credibility and he is very bais, corrupt to the core, people came out with T shirt say gambiahasdecicded with all that peaceful he when and arrested them. So this mean is OK for APRC supporter to out on the street and do what ever they like because jammeh got their back.

  3. Adama Barrow fraudulently President elect

Traitors behave just like how Sheriff Bojang and Alieu K Jammeh and others do.

Yahya expect that many of their tribesmen will abandon you, but remain steadfast and reaffirm your position “backward never forward ever. God is ever powerful and Inshallah they will all regret their acts. As the wollof saying goes “Sosseh du sosal ken” they are devillish and only want to see your downfall but they will never live to see that. Note that with their treacherous plans in their defections none will ever survive to see your downfall. It is now clear to you that with all what they were saying in niceties and praise singing they were undermining you just to see your downfall but God the all knowing and everpowerful is and will continue to.protect you from their evil machination. INSHALLAH.

    LONGLIVE YAHYA A.J.J. JAMMEH
    LONGLIVE THE GAMBIA

    • Your cousin lost buddy get over it. The folks you called traitor are smart men for bailing out even though they waited to long to do so. You and your hero jammeh are fake Muslims that’s why you God let you down. You welcome to join his excellency Barrow peace movement room for every tribe.

    • As I had written before, Fake News” or Commentary on a Subject and Issue of this Significance and Importance should be published but with a Caveat. I very much doubt that a “Adama Barrow” individual would write such inflaming and Tribalist, Prejudicial and Sectionalist “Impostor” hell bent on showing DIVISION and Tribal Conflict. At this point in the Gambia, when Sensitivities and Emotions are running high, the Gambians and especially those who are in position to Shape and Influence Public opinion, should be Diligent and Cautious of falling prey to the National and Foreign Agents who would rather see a Gambia and Gambians reduced to a Failed State of Anarchy and Anomie. There are Vultures and Hyenas WITHIN AND WITHOUT, who would stop at nothing until they achieve the goal and objective of reducing the Gambia and Gambians to Refugees and Beggars both Internally and Externally. It is a Public service to have a disclaimer or clarifier to the article readers, that the “Sosseh du Sossal Ken” statement is offensive, stereotypical and prejudicial and should be seen as such. Journalistic ethics and integrity demands that Tribalist and ethnic group Stereotyping comments are not and will not be accepted. Under normal circumstances, such Commentary would be laughed off. These are not such days. The Dark Clouds gathering in the Gambia and over the Gambia demand intropesctiveness and tolerance of each other. Failings to do so only furthers the interests and ambitions of the simple minded and thrive in mayhem and conflict. To the Culprit of the Fake and Impostor article, please find another trade and career or at least, HANDS OFF GAMBIA AND THE GAMBIANS. ONE GANBIA, ONE PEOPLE UBDER ONE PEACEFUL BLUE SKY.

  4. looks like sam is having plenty offtime at the moment to write all his bullshit propaganda comments everywhere

  5. Jammeh position will drive Gambian administration in ruff problem in the near future.
According constitution the incumbent presidend cease funcions on the 18 January.
So next day he will be no longer president. Even the elected presidend cannot assume the job.
If there is no president, no one have powers or responsibilities delegated as they cease also on the 18.
This means that nobody can aproved any expenses within the administration.
There will be no salaries paid to public servents, police, militaries, and so on.
It will be not possible to buy essence for cars, and no one can use cars. Suppliers can’t be paid.
Ministers do not have competence to delegate, and their job also cease on the 18, as well as all political staff.
Jammeh can’t use government house, or cars, or evan his office.
And if anybody do any payment, even supported by previous orders, he is doing it by his onw option, and he can be considered as robering government assets.
He will be persecuted as a common thief, he can be jailed. Evan Jammeh.
And the president elected can order police to arrest those thiefs. If the police don’t follow those orders, he can ask to any force, internal or external, to help him to arrest common thiefs.
So just imagine the army without the wages paid!

  6. STUPID article.if ECOWAS does not intervene, we accept this idiot to steal our. u hiden author are like jameh

  7. tafel,
Where were you on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd December after President announced conceding defeat and the vandalism and utter disrespect for APRC supporters and their properties by the Coalition supporters? Did/Do you condone those acts of banditry and violations?

  8. Come on Babu,
Are you that ignorant? They disrespected APRC supporters? How many people did Jammeh kill, arrested, fired, seized their properties etc. Some of you truly belong where you are right now. Don’t dismiss the pain other people suffer Yahya Jammeh. Its plenty and we shall see when things get loose. Are you not disrespecting the majority of Gambians who voted for a new leadership?

    Please think before you post.
