Police in the Gambia Sunday arrested a female member of the country’s National Assembly.
Fatoumatta Touma Njai, a People’s Progressive Party (PPP) member for Banjul South is currently held at Senegambia Police Station.
Gambian authorities are yet to comment on Ms Njai’s arrest but there are reports on social media that she was arrested after an altercation with some security officials at Golden Beach Hotel where recent arrivals to the country are being quarantined.
Reports said Ms Njai had visited the hotel and tried to remove a relative who is being quarantined. The resulting altercation led to police being called, who effected her arrest.
A member of the ECOWAS Parliament, Ms Njai was elected into the Gambian National Assembly in 2017, where she is championing the cause of women and youths.
