The Government of the Gambia has spent over D931 million in its fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, which is wrecking its economy.
According to Mambury Njie, minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, D1,48,571,203 has been allocated to fight the pandemic out of which D931,26,142,020 was spent.
He did not however, give a breakdown on what the money was spent on.
The country’s Health minister, Dr Ahmadou Lamin Samateh has revealed in May high level of corruption in the government especially his ministry over funds earmarked to tackle the coronavirus pandemic.
Dr Samateh said some government officials are more concerned about personal allowances than putting emphasis on using the funds to up the ante against Covid-19 whose cases in the country.
“Instead of us responding to Covid-19 by strategising, developing policies, we are dealing with allowances and allowance lists,” he told members of the country’s National Assembly.
The Gambia with a population of nearly 2 million people has registered 42 cases of the disease, which has killed two people. Figures from the country’s Health Ministry said 26 people have recovered while 14 still are still being treated.
