The Government of the Gambia has announced today that it will sell the 3000 metric tonnes of high-quality rice donated to the country by Japan.
The government said the rice comes in bags of 30 kilograms clearly marked “Japanese Grant” and shall be sold in lots of 2500 bags per lot at the cost of D450.00 per bag.
The rice is being sold at a time when an estimated 136, 000 Gambians are at risk of severe food insecurity mainly due to the significant reduction in the 2020 production of groundnuts, the major cash crop, with consequent declines in households’ income and purchasing power.
But the Office of the President has decided to conduct the sale of the rice and has requested interested buyers to send applications to the secretary general Office of the President
In June last year, the Government of the Gambia sold 115,956 bags of rice donated to the country by Japan. It said proceeds of the sale was used to support the government in its National Development Plan’s (NDP) priority areas.
