Sotokoi Appeals For Help As Reaching Fields Could Be Matter Of Life & Death

The able-bodied men of Niamina Sotokoi

This is that time of the year when able-bodied men of Sotokoi mobilize to build a link that would enable the village’s women access their rice fields.

Sotokoi lies in Niamina East in the Central River Region of The Gambia.

During rainy season, women of this far-flung settlement engage in rice cultivation as contribution to the household nutrition.

But they are seriously challenged.

Aside the costly fertilizer price and lack of modern farming implements, the women rice growers of Sotokoi also have to put up with the daily nightmare of reaching their fields.

They’ve been cut off from their farms by a body of water, stretching almost two kilometers.

Consequently, the men have to erect a makeshift footpath on the water annually to enable women gain access to their fields.

However, considering the threat to the safety of the women as a result of navigating the precarious improvised bridge, Sotokoi is appealing for support to permanently fix the problem.
