The Office of the Inspector General of Police on Monday notified all regional police commissioners of the decision for the suspension of all unofficial checkpoints with effect from today, the police announced.
According to a statement from the police, the decision for the immediate suspension of all unofficial police barriers on the country’s roads was informed by the need to ease the movement of commuters and to “address other inconveniences” associated with unofficial checkpoints.
“This is a policy decision that is at the heart of the newly adopted policy doctrine of The Gambia Police Force,” the statement added.
The police clarified though that unofficial checkpoints are “temporarily” mounted at “accident-prone locations to address urgent security needs and other traffic-related offences”.
