Gambia Police Chief Reminds Top Brass About Their Responsibility

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abdoulie Sanyang, has reminded top law enforcement officers about their primary responsibility, urging them to go the extramile to fulfill their duty to protect and serve.

“As leaders in the field of policing, we bear the responsibility of ensuring the safety and well-being of our communities,” he told participants at the first ever Gambia Police Force (GPF) Leadership Conference which was held from 10 to 12 January 2024 at Paradise Suites Hotel in Kololi.

The conclave of the country’s law enforcement body comes at a time when the Security Security Reform (SSR) implementation has now become a reality. Efforts are being done to make sure the institution inexorably moves away from its past reputation.

IGP Sanyang made it clear that their role go beyond traditional law enforcement as it encompasses “community engagement, problem-solving, and the cultivation of trust and confidence.”

As the tiny West African nation is increasingly confronted with major security challenges, Gambia Police boss lauded their “ability to adapt to change, embrace technology and Forster collaboration” that will “determine our success in fulfilling our duty to protect and serve.”

Centred around “Police Leadership: Reinvigorating A People Focus Police Force,” the IGP said the theme is in line with the essence of Police shared mission.

In an attempt to widen the scope, IGP Samyang said, in today’s interconnected world, collaboration is not just an option; it is a necessity.

He then added: “We must strengthen partnerships with other law enforcement agencies, community organisations and stakeholders to build a collective front against crime and social challenges.”

Gambia Police Chief expressed hopes tha the exchanges of knowledge and experiences during the day the three-day conference will provide “fertile grounds for the growth of such collaborative efforts.”

Taking into consideration the digital transformation in policing, he insisted on the need to embrace innovation, saying it is pivoltal for staying ahead of the curve.

“The technological landscape is ever-changing, and we must harness its potential to enhance our investigative capabilities, improve communication, and optimize resource allocation,” he said.
