The National Assembly of The Gambia has ratified an agreement with the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone A to establish the sub-regional body’s headquarters in Banjul.
WAFU Zone A, a subdivision of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), includes nine West African nations: The Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Mauritania, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.
This move is seen as a significant achievement for The Gambia, with Lamin Kaba Bajo, the president of the Gambia Football Federation, serving as the current president of WAFU Zone A.
During the presentation of the motion, Sports Minister Bakary Badjie highlighted the potential benefits, including greater international influence in football and socio-economic advantages.
With the Assembly’s approval, the agreement will now be submitted to CAF and FIFA for official recognition of WAFU Zone A as a sub-regional, internationally affiliated organization headquartered in The Gambia.
