Musa Sheriff, editor-in-chief of The Voice, and deputy editor-in-chief Momodou Justice Darboe were arraigned at the Kanifing magistrates’ court, presided over by Magistrate Mben Faal, on charges of false publication and broadcasting.
The indictment alleges that on September 23, the journalists published a story claiming President Barrow had selected Muhammed Jah as his successor for the 2026 election, a claim they allegedly knew was false.
Both pleaded not guilty.
The prosecution, led by Malamin Jarju, requested an adjournment to present witnesses but did not oppose bail.
Defense lawyer Lamin J. Darboe applied for bail under section 99 of the CPC, emphasising the journalists were not flight risks.
Magistrate Faal granted bail at D100,000 each, with a Gambian surety required to submit identification.
The case was adjourned to October 31 for a full hearing.
