Heavy Rains Flood Banjul, Drainage System Blamed

Heavy rainfall has left several parts of Banjul under water, disrupting transport, businesses, and daily activities in the capital.

Tuesday’s downpour overwhelmed the city’s drainage system, with floodwaters reaching knee level in some neighborhoods. Motorists were left stranded as vehicles stalled, while pedestrians waded through flooded streets.

Residents say the situation highlights the city’s long-standing drainage challenges. “This is not the first time we’ve experienced flooding in Banjul,” said Omar Touray, a resident. “The government needs to take responsibility and invest in a proper drainage system.”

The floods forced shop closures and delayed workers who could not navigate the waterlogged roads. Local vendors reported losses after customers stayed away.

Authorities have not issued a formal response, but residents are urging swift intervention and long-term measures to reduce the impact of seasonal flooding.

The incident adds to concerns over infrastructure resilience in Banjul, where heavy rains are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
