Jungulars’ Founder Lays Low In Salaji, Supporting Community Development

Former army lieutenant Ismaila Jammeh, who has been allegedly in the forefront of the formation of Jammeh’s killer squad, is leading a quiet life in the Western Gambian settlement of Salaji, devoting part of his time to community development.

Despite the key role that he allegedly played in the formation of the brutal Jungulars outfit, Lt. Jammeh appeared to have opened a new page when he sometime ago indicated to this reporter that he was ready to contribute his quota to national development in whatever way he could.

For sometime now, Lt. Jammeh would join members of the Salaji community in environmental sanitation interventions and other community development endeavours.

Despite the accountability question still being asked about him and other suspected Jammeh enablers, Lt. Jammeh has decided to get involved with his community.

“The Gambia belongs to all of us and we cannot wait for one person to develop it,” Jammeh once told this reporter.

The Gambia government, however, continues to come under criticism for the perceived slow pace of its accountability project for Jammeh-era atrocities.
