To the honorable members of the National Assembly, we urge you to reject the 2024 draft constitution in its entirety, a document born out of the same flawed process that squandered 116 million dalasis of taxpayers’ money on a previous draft.
Unlike the previous draft that emerged from a nationwide consultation, engaging citizens from villages to the diaspora, this new draft appears to be an executive-driven initiative, lacking the broad-based participation and input of the Gambian people.
As you consider the future of our nation, remember that this moment is not just about today’s politics, but about the unborn generations who will inherit the Gambian state.
The constitutions of enduring democracies have stood the test of time, providing stability and prosperity for centuries. We implore you to draw lessons from these examples and strive to create a foundational document that will guide Gambia towards a brighter future, one that is born out of the collective will and participation of its citizens, not the interests of a select few.
We urge you to seize this opportunity to craft a constitution that will last for generations, one that will stand as a beacon of hope and progress for centuries to come, and restore the people’s trust in the process. The future of Gambia is in your hands.
