67 Years & 6 Months Behind Bars: Michael Sang Correa’s Prison Sentence

Michael Sang Correa has been handed a staggering prison sentence, totalling 67 years and 6 months. The court ruled that he will serve 135 months for each of six counts, with the sentences to be served consecutively.

This adds up to a whopping 810 months behind bars.

The lengthy sentence marks a significant conclusion to the case, leaving Correa’s future bleak for the next six decades and beyond.

After hearing the victim’s impact statement, the judge carefully considered the arguments presented by both the defendant and the prosecution regarding the appropriate sentencing guideline. Reflecting on Correa’s upbringing in a poor environment and his decision to join the military, the judge acknowledged the potential mitigating factors.

However, she emphasised that Correa’s actions were a matter of choice, stating, “You could have made different choices. You know that your conduct in torturing your fellow citizens was immoral.” While the prosecution had sought a 120-year sentence, the judge deemed it “a large, inflated number that is meaningless in the real world.”

Ultimately, she believed a life sentence would be fitting, and after considering the defendant’s legal arguments regarding the calculation, she denied the variance, paving the way for the final verdict.
