Gambia(JollofNews) – A Gambian businessman who was detained incommunicado for eight months was yesterday given a D1 million bail by a local magistrate after he was charged with conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretence.

Yusupha Saidy, who was languishing at the headquarters of the feared National Intelligence Agency (NIA) in Banjul since his arrest, was finally charged yesterday at the Banjul Magistrates’ Court
The prominent businessman is said to have in April 2015 conspired with three foreign nationals and fraudulently obtained €180,000 from one Omar Faruk Deniz for the purpose of transportation and customs clearance of 100 metal boxes containing US$15 million, 10 tonnes of gold, some diamonds and portraits.
He rejected all the charges.

Despite pleas by state prosecutors for him to be remanded pending the determination of the case, Mr Saidy was granted bail by Senior Magistrates Abdoulie Fatty of the Banjul court. He was ordered to surrender all his travel documents and to report weekly to the police headquarters in Banjul.
