A third person in the Gambia has tested positive of coronavirus.
Authorities said an unnamed male who travelled to the country from France on 17th March and was living in the Upper River Region of the country tested positive of the disease on Monday.
The male was said to have taken ill on 21st March and reported to Numuyel Health Post at around 03:00 hrs.
A sample was collected later at around 14:00 hrs which was tested and gave a positive result.
The male is said to have been moved from his residence in Basse, where he was self-isolating, and is currently isolated at the Medical Research Council (MRC) in Fajara.
MRC, the country’s only testing centre has issued a statement stating that it is supporting the Ministry of Health to rapidly identify any contacts the patient had and those identified as close contacts will be given health advice and tested in line with Ministry of Health procedures.

“As we confirm this third case, we urge the general public to strongly follow the World Health Organization guidance on coronavirus control, including washing your hands regularly with soap and water, blowing your nose/sneeze into a tissue, and avoiding crowds as much as possible,” MRC said.
“Anyone who feels ill or observes COVID-19 symptoms should immediately contact the national helpline by calling 1025 from any network, free of charge.”
