A former Gambian Attorney General and minister of Justice in the erstwhile regime of Yahya Jammeh has tested positive for coronavirus.
Mama Fatima Singhateh revealed the positive test on Tuesday, making her the first Gambian to openly admit carrying the virus.
She had recently returned to the Gambia from Liberia where she was on an assignment for the Office of the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights.
In a tweet sent on Tuesday night, the former minister wrote: ” Dear friends, after being away on official assignment with the OHCHR in Liberia, I returned home a few days ago and tested positive with COVID – 19. Alhamdulilah I am well & asymptomatic. I will isolate as required by gov’t protocol & hope to resume normal life soon.”
Three people including a nurse have already died of the disease in the Gambia while over 40 people who tested positive have recovered.
