Afternoon Shift In Gambian Schools Could Cease If…

Afternoon shift in Gambian schools could be a thing of the past if the permanent secretary at the basic and secondary education ministry has it his way.

The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education is still licking it’s wounds following the embarrassing 2022 WAEC results and is now proposing solutions.

The Permanent Secretary at the ministry, Louis Moses Mendy, is now proposing, among others, the stoppage of afternoon shift in all schools across the country. This, he was convinced, would ensure standards do not fall.

In fact, PS Mendy has been in denial as far as the performance of 2022 WAEC candidates in The Gambia was concerned.

He pointed out that this year’s results represent an improvement as compared to last year’s.

However as a result of the over 70 per cent failure rate this year, many have been calling on the education minister, her PS and policy designers at the ministry to take responsibility and quit.

But the education PS believed the performance of candidates this year was affected by factors such as double shifting, the teacher-student ratio and Covid-19.
