(JollofNews) – The Gambian regime of President Yahya Jammeh has urged foreign governments not to stick their noses in the country’s internal affairs.
The warning came in the back of a minor anti-government demonstration held on Thursday afternoon at the country’s largest town, Serrekunda by some sympathisers of the main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP).
The protesters were rounded-up by security officers and are currently detained at various police stations.
Although life has since returned to normal in the Westfield area of Serrekunda and people are going about their daily businesses, the Jammeh regime warned it takes the “security of the country seriously and will not therefore condone any untoward activities or actions that may jeopardise the stability and order in the country.”
In a media statement issued last night by Sheriff Bojang, minister of Information, the government said it “respects its commitments to upholding the principles of the United Nations in relations to the observance of state sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries.
“In the same vein, the Government also expects all the members of the international community to extend the same respect with regard to state sovereignty to the Gambia and desist from interfering in the internal domestic affairs of the country.”
While reassuring Gambians that it will continue to stand for and guard their national interest at all times, the regime expressed its gratitude to members of the international community particularly friends of the Gambia for their roles in complementing its efforts in pursuing its development agenda over the years.
