Gambia: President Jammeh’s Farm Manager Jailed For Theft

kanilai farmA former manager of President Yahya Jammeh’s Kanilai Family Farm, Lang Conteh, was Thursday given a two-year jail term with hard labour by a local magistrate after he was found guilty of theft.

Mr Conteh was  found guilty of stealing D1, 538,804.95 from the president’s business between 2012 and 2013, while serving as its managing director.

He was also ordered by presiding Magistrate Omar Cham to repay the full sum of the money he stole or spend another year at the Mile Two prisons.

Mr Conteh was a former senior official at the Central Bank of the Gambia. He was a partner at the defunct Youth Development Enterprise and Camelot.

His troubles started when he was tried and jailed for economic crimes with the late Baba Jobe in the early 2000s. He was later released and went into exile in Senegal. He returned to the Gambia few years ago.
