President Adama Barrow of The Gambia arrived in New York on Monday evening to attend the 79th Ordinary Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 79), which commenced on Tuesday, 24th September 2024.
The opening remarks from global leaders emphasized the need for a more equitable world order, free from discrimination and unjust biases, particularly against the marginalized and vulnerable populations.
The discussions highlighted significant global changes since the founding of the UN in 1945, including the increase in independent nations, gender representation in public spheres, and the growing involvement of young people in governance and democratisation.
The ongoing conflicts and wars, particularly the civilian casualties in Gaza and other regions, fueled calls for collective efforts to ensure justice and peace for all.
There was a strong push for reforms within the UN to ensure global peace and security, with special attention to women and youth as vital contributors to peacebuilding and global progress.
The call for unity and cooperation was reiterated, as world leaders emphasized the need to resist the domination of the weak by the powerful.
A prominent theme throughout the assembly was the Israel-Palestine conflict, with leaders urging an end to Israel’s occupation of Palestine and advocating for a peaceful two-state solution.
In the afternoon, President Barrow held a bilateral meeting with the President of Mauritius, Prithviasingh Roopun, where they discussed matters of mutual interest and explored ways to enhance cooperation between their two nations.
