Kebba Madi’s Mining Licence Was Not Revoked By Barrow – Official

The decision for the revocation of the mining license issued to Kebba Madi Bojang came from the Ministry of Mining and the Department of Geology, contrary to widespread claims Mr. Bojang’s license was revoked by President Adama Barrow, said a Gambia government official.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, explained to JollofNews that the cancellation of Kebba Madi’s Ginkon outfit’s mining license was the outcome of the visits to the various mining sites by former mining minister Abdoulie Jobe, his adviser Momodou B. Sarr and team in 2022.

Shortly after the visits to the sand mining sites in Bato Kunku, Tujereng and Sanyang, Mr. Jobe spoke to reporters and he expressed shock and disbelief at the “massive destruction” wrought on the environment by Ginkon’s mining activities.

“He then advised that Ginkon be stopped in its track before it causes further environmental devastation in the coastal communities,” explained our informant.

He accused Ginkon of sidestepping its responsibility to rehabilitate its mines.

“This is sufficient cause for its mining license to be revoked,” he added.

Meanwhile, some members of the Association of PROs of Kombo South Coastal Communities last month had an interview with Star Tv‘s Yusupha Darboe in which one of them, Muhammed Sillah, accused Ginkon of refusing to honour its side of the bargain with the Bato Kunku community as regards payment of royalties.

The association also alleged that most of the photos on social media about environmental carnage in Kombo coastal communities were taken from Ginkon’s mines.

Meanwhile, Ginkon’s CEO Kebba Madi Bojang and the NPP parted ways recently.

JollofNews has gathered that Bojang, a one-time ruling party youth president, was poised to oppose President Barrow in the 2026 presidential election.

One of his close aides Ousainou Baye Sankareh told JollofNews last month that they had plan in the pipeline to register a political party with the Independent Electoral Commission.

However, some top officials of the President’s party had been treating this as bluff, but Kebba Madi himself had hinted in a previous interview that there was no turning back.

Our requests to Kebba Madi for an interview were unanswered.
