GDC Dismisses Alliance Claims, Reaffirms Independence Ahead Of 2026 Elections

The Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) has firmly denied rumors of a political alliance with the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), asserting that the party remains an independent force ahead of the 2026 presidential elections.

GDC leader and Secretary General, Hon. Mamma Kandeh, addressed the speculation in a message to supporters on Wednesday, July 24th, calling the claims baseless and affirming that no such agreement exists.

“I heard people going around saying that GDC has partnered with NPP to work,” Kandeh said. “But I want to let you know that if GDC is to partner with any political party, I would be the one to announce it.”

The denial follows weeks of speculation on social media and within political circles, with suggestions of a behind-the-scenes deal between the two parties. Kandeh, however, made clear that the GDC is not in any coalition or alliance, and called on his supporters to remain focused.

“GDC is currently standing on its own,” he stated. “I am urging its militants to focus and listen to me as the party leader.”

While shutting down current alliance rumors, Kandeh did not entirely rule out future political partnerships. He emphasized that any such move would be made transparently and based on clearly defined terms guided by national interest, not personal or political gain.

“My aim is to move this country forward,” he said. “If I am to partner with any, it will be in the interest of the country and my party.”

He added that any future alliance would only happen under principles aligned with the GDC’s values, not just for the sake of political convenience. “We remain independent,” Kandeh said, “but if we ever go into an alliance, it will be based on principle not just power or position.”

The GDC’s latest statement is seen as a move to solidify its identity ahead of the 2026 polls and counter mounting speculation about its political strategy. As the race begins to take shape, the party is positioning itself as a standalone contender with a focus on unity, discipline, and national development.

Kandeh concluded by urging party supporters to remain vigilant and united, promising that all strategic decisions will be communicated clearly and directly by the leadership.
