Gambia Urged To Lead With Moral Clarity On Gaza, Says Indian Muslim Group

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), one of India’s most prominent socio-religious organisations, has called on the Gambia and the European Union to take bold international action in response to the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

In back-to-back diplomatic meetings in New Delhi this week, JIH delegations pressed both the EU and Gambian officials to stand firmly with the Palestinian people.

The group appealed for a stronger international response to what they described as continued Israeli aggression, and for urgent steps to ensure humanitarian aid reaches civilians caught in the conflict.

At the Embassy of The Gambia, a JIH delegation led by Prof. Salim Engineer was received by H.E. Mustapha Jawara, Gambia’s High Commissioner to India, along with Deputy Head of Mission Mr. Ebrima Mboob and senior embassy officials. The delegation also included Malik Motasim Khan, Dr. Rizwan Rafeeqi, and Laeeq Ahmad Khan.

The JIH representatives commended The Gambia’s past leadership at the International Court of Justice, particularly its legal action against Myanmar over the persecution of the Rohingya. They said that same moral courage is urgently needed again this time for Gaza.

In a separate meeting, JIH President Syed Sadatullah Husaini led a second delegation to the EU Delegation to India, where they met with Mr. Klas Nayman, Head of Political Affairs. Also part of the team were JIH Vice Presidents Prof. Salim Engineer and S. Ameen ul Hasan, along with Dr. Rizwan Rafeeqi.

In both meetings, the JIH teams urged the diplomatic missions to support immediate ceasefire efforts, ensure humanitarian corridors are opened, and push for the recognition of Palestine as an independent and sovereign state.

Speaking to reporters afterward, a JIH representative said the appeal was not about politics, but about basic human dignity.

“What is happening in Gaza is beyond politics it’s a humanitarian emergency. The Gambia has a moral voice that is respected globally. We believe it can and should lead efforts to end the suffering.”
