Could Dr. Ousman Gagigo Become Gambia’s Next President?

Economist and international consultant Dr. Ousman Gagigo and political allies have filed papers with the IEC for a registration of a new political party, and the question that arises is: Could Dr. Ousman Gagigo become the Gambia’s next President?

Gambians head to the polls next year to elect their President, but the question that lingers is: Who will it be?

President Adama Barrow, who ruled The Gambia for nine years now, and his rival long-time opposition leader Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, who has been seeking the highest office in the land since 1996, are seen in many quarters as the main contenders.

However, Gambian politics can be full of surprises. In 1994, a politically-unknown military officer succeeded the country’s first president, effectively ending the 30-year-rule of the People Progressive Party. Fast forward to 2016, a relatively unknown political quantity effectively ended the 22-year rule of the PPP dispensation.

The question that easily comes to mind is: Will the 2026 election produce yet another surprise result with Dr. Ousman Gagigo becoming the country’s next president?

Well, the economist has yet to make public his political ambition but when contacted by JollofNews last Thursday, he confirmed that he and his allies have submitted their papers to the IEC with the objective of registering a political party. He declined to elaborate.
