Elderly Man ‘Resorted’ To Farm Labour To Earn Ride To Darboe’s Welcoming

Due to the economic and financial hardship that the majority of Gambians continue to wallow in, a 73-year-old hen seller in the Central River Region (CRR) said he had to resort to farm labour to be able to join thousands of Gambians that congregated at the Banjul International Airport on Saturday to welcome the UDP leader from his European tour.

Kemeseng Sanneh, a 73-year-old man from Fuladu Sukuta, was able to make it to Hon. Darboe’s reception party but at a steep cost.

He explained that he sought a ride from a motorcycle owner to travel many miles to western Gambia to be able to be part of the welcoming, but that the motorbike owner had insisted that he could only hitch a ride on his bike if he helped him remove weed from his farm.

“I had to work hard on the farm to be able to be part of the remarkable history [Darboe’s welcoming] that’s now unfolding,” he stated.

Sanneh said he was left with no other option, but to work on the farm even without receiving any monetary compensation.

The elderly man’s story is a testament to the UDP’s grassroots support and love for its leader.

“I did what I did out of genuine love for the United Democratic Party leader Lawyer Ousainou Darboe,” he emphasized.
