Aggrieved staff members of Albayrak now re-baptised Al Port have threatened to stage a peaceful protest over delay in salary payment and to demand better condition of service, JollofNews has learned.
One of the aggrieved staff members, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed frustration with the company’s operations, questioning why Al Port would opt for a loan from a Gambian bank instead of the World Bank.
“This Turkish company is taking advantage of Gambians,” the worker said. “If they truly have money, it should be reflected in their operations. What changes have they made at the port? Nothing absolutely,” contended our interlocutor.
Al Port recently found itself in an awkward situation when the Managing Director of the Gambia Ports Authority (GPA), Ousman Jobarteh, revealed that the company had contracted a €13.5 million loan from Zenith Bank (Gambia) without informing or obtaining the consent of the GPA.
The workers, who are currently locked in talks to put finishing touches to their protest plan, plan to petition Al Port and its partners before going ahead with the protest.

The protest is expected to boil over the streets of the Gambian capital, Banjul.
When contacted, Al Port’s communications assistant, Maimuna Bah, refused to entertain our questions.
