APRC Militants Step Up Preparations In Kanilai As Talk Of Jammeh’s Return Grows

Supporters of former president Yahya Jammeh intensified their activities in Kanilai over the weekend, insisting they are ready to welcome him back despite the Barrow administration’s repeated stance that he will face justice if he returns.

Members of the APRC No Alliance faction converged on Jammeh’s residence on Saturday for a large cleaning exercise that many viewed as a direct show of readiness ahead of Jammeh’s declared plan to come back to The Gambia in November 2025. The move followed an audio message circulated recently in which the former leader said he intended to return and “stay peacefully.”

Interim party leader Yahfaye Tamba thanked the volunteers for their turnout, praising what he described as their loyalty and commitment. He reminded them that none of the militants were paid for the work, saying their effort reflected what they believed Jammeh had done for the country.

Tamba also urged supporters to remain calm and respect the law. He downplayed fears surrounding Jammeh’s promise to return, noting that the former president announced both his departure and his intention to come back. “Why should you be afraid when he says he is coming back?” he asked.

Jerending Sanyang, another figure within the faction, told the gathering that the group was fully prepared for any updates about Jammeh’s movements. He encouraged supporters to stay alert and ready to mobilise at any time. “Even if the information reaches us at midnight, it will be shared,” he said.

The activity in Kanilai has further highlighted the widening split between Jammeh’s loyalists and the current government. While his supporters speak of hope and anticipation, authorities in Banjul have maintained that any return must align with the recommendations of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission, which found Jammeh responsible for widespread human rights abuses.
