Kombo East National Assembly Member Abdou Sowe has sharply criticized the Brikama Area Council, accusing it of failing to provide basic services and calling on President Adama Barrow to step in and save the West Coast Region’s administrative capital from what he described as steady decline.
Speaking during the president’s joint meeting in Brikama, Hon. Sowe said the council has shown neither capacity nor commitment to address the town’s growing challenges. He urged President Barrow to give Brikama the same level of attention that transformed Banjul, arguing that the town’s status demands stronger leadership and meaningful development.
According to Hon. Sowe, Brikama continues to struggle with poor infrastructure and worsening conditions during the rainy season. He said the town is often left to “its fate,” with roads, drainage and sanitation showing clear signs of neglect.
The lawmaker also raised concerns about the council’s financial transparency. He questioned the BAC’s public statements that D28 million had been distributed to wards across the region, saying the figure does not match the council’s known annual revenue.

He added that residents have seen little evidence of the required 60 percent of council income that should be reinvested in community projects.
