Barrow Defiant Amid Rising Opposition Criticism

President Adama Barrow has pushed back against growing criticism from the United Democratic Party, insisting that efforts to stop his political momentum will only make him more determined. He delivered the remarks during a meeting with residents in the Kanifing Municipality, where he questioned the performance of opposition representatives elected in the area.

Barrow told the gathering that voters in KMC had “made one big mistake” by electing opposition candidates at the National Assembly, mayoral, and ward levels. He argued that the lack of cooperation from opposition-led institutions is affecting development efforts. The president described himself as a servant of the people and urged residents to support him by electing National People’s Party candidates who he believes will work closely with his government.

He pointed to what he described as visible progress under his leadership, including roads and other infrastructure projects across the municipality. Barrow also referenced the findings of the Local Government Commission of Inquiry, which he said exposed alleged corruption and financial mismanagement in opposition-controlled councils.

The president promised that even greater changes are ahead. He said his administration is preparing a new wave of development initiatives between 2026 and 2031, adding that his growing experience and confidence will allow him to deliver more results in a future term.

His remarks come as the debate over a potential third term intensifies. The UDP and other critics maintain that Barrow should not seek re-election again, arguing it would go against his earlier commitments to term limits. Barrow, however, has remained firm, saying he intends to contest the next presidential election regardless of opposition to his plans.
