BAC Collects D136M In First Half Of 2026, Darboe Reaffirms Commitment To Community Development

Brikama Area Council (BAC) Chairman Yankuba Darboe has announced that the council generated D136 million in revenue during the first six months of 2026, describing the performance as a strong indication that the local authority is on course to meet and potentially exceed its year-end revenue target.

Darboe made the disclosure on Wednesday during a community engagement meeting in Foni Bondali, part of his ongoing institutional tour aimed at inspecting council-funded projects and engaging residents across the West Coast Region.

Addressing community members and local leaders, the BAC chairman said the revenue collected between January and June is being reinvested into communities through education, infrastructure, and other essential public services.

“The millions that are coming back to the communities are directly from the taxpayers’ money collected from the various districts under the Brikama Area Council,” Darboe said, emphasising the council’s commitment to transparency and accountable use of public funds.

He noted that the council has strengthened its revenue collection system by deploying dedicated collectors across markets within its jurisdiction, enabling a steady flow of locally generated revenue to finance development initiatives.

According to Darboe, the council remains on track to achieve its projected annual revenue of approximately D300 million, with the possibility of surpassing that figure if the current pace of collection continues through the second half of the year.

The BAC chairman highlighted education as one of the council’s key investment priorities, noting that revenue generated by the council is currently funding tuition fees and scholarship programmes for school-going children across the region.

He expressed hope that the educational support initiatives introduced under his administration would become a lasting feature of the council’s development agenda, providing long-term relief to families facing financial challenges.

Darboe also reiterated his commitment to strengthening grassroots governance through greater fiscal decentralisation. He announced plans to allocate D5 million annually to Ward Development Committees (WDCs), enabling communities to identify and implement their own development priorities.

The proposed funding, he said, is intended to empower local communities, accelerate grassroots development, and deepen citizen participation in local governance.

The chairman’s remarks come as the Brikama Area Council continues to expand its investment in community development projects, with increasing emphasis on transparency, improved service delivery, and local economic development across the West Coast Region.
