The Gambia Transport Union (GTU) has commended President Adama Barrow and his administration for ongoing road infrastructure projects across the country, describing the investments as a significant boost to the transport sector and the wider economy.
Speaking exclusively to JollofNews about the impact of the country’s expanding road network, GTU President Omar Ceesay said the construction and rehabilitation of roads were delivering tangible benefits to commercial drivers, commuters and communities.
Ceesay said improved roads and modernised transport routes were helping to ease congestion while making journeys across the country faster, safer and more reliable.
“The expansion and construction of roads across the country are yielding immediate, practical benefits for the transport sector. Eased congestion and modernised transit routes are making regional travel faster, safer and more reliable,” Ceesay said.
For years, commercial drivers in The Gambia have faced significant challenges caused by poorly maintained roads, including frequent vehicle breakdowns, increased maintenance costs and lengthy travel times.
According to the GTU leadership, the government’s investment in road infrastructure is helping to address some of these longstanding challenges and providing much-needed relief to transport operators.
The improved road network is also expected to facilitate smoother movement of people and goods between communities, while supporting economic activity and improving access to essential services.
Ceesay said the benefits of better roads extend beyond transport operators, noting that thousands of Gambians who rely on public and commercial transport stand to benefit from improved travel conditions.
The GTU president further reaffirmed the union’s willingness to work closely with the government to ensure that developments in the transport sector remain aligned with the country’s broader national development objectives.
He said the union would continue engaging relevant authorities on issues affecting commercial drivers and commuters, while supporting initiatives aimed at creating a safer, more efficient and reliable transport system.
