(JollofNews) – Muslim and Christian leaders in The Gambia are due to meet President Yahya Jammeh on Thursday to help diffuse political tension in the small West African nation.
The meeting is organised by Mr Jammeh at State House and expected to be graced by imams, pastors and other influential figures in the country.
Tension is currently high in The Gambia after Mr Jammeh refused to accept the outcome of the December 1st election, which was declared in favour of Adama Barrow of the opposition coalition.
Mr Jammeh had initially conceded defeat and praised the country’s electoral system as rigged proof. But a week later, he changed his mind and called the results null and void accusing the electoral commission of committing huge and un acceptable mistakes.
The opposition have rejected calls for fresh elections and have accused Mr Jammeh of violating the constitution and threatening the peace of the country.
They urged him to handover power at the end of term in mid-January.
And as the standoff continues, religious leaders who have always sided with Mr Jammeh and have campaigned for him during the election had remained tight lipped.
Mr Jammeh was seen as the financial backer of religious organisations and has over the donated thousands of Dalasis to the Gambia’s Islamic and Christian councils.
The Gambia is the most peaceful country in West Africa. All citizens of The Gambia, their friends, and well-wishers should work fast to ensure that the country does not experience the political crisis and its attendant evil that places like Liberia, Sierra-Leone, and Ivory Coast had, which paralysed the development of the countries, claimed the lives of many people, and left many with ugly stories to tell about senseless human weaknesses.
I wonder where Gambia is head to? Who will save us from the this trouble?
Hmmmmm,,, West Africa, and Africa at large…..Wow!!!!! I can’t really understand why Yahya Jammeh is refusing to stepdown after losing elections very clearly? Look Mr. Jammeh, or whatever you called yourself, please transfer power peacefully to H. E. President -elect Adama Barrow of the Gambia people ok. The people of Gambia are tired with you. Please stepdown and leave the people statehouse my man. I have read the entire history of Gambia from the date of her independence in 1965 till now, unfortunately, i did not see any clause or phrase that says the Gambians statehouse is a personal property of the Jammeh’s. I read numerous statements in your publications stating that you will defend the constitution and sovergnty of Gambia, hahahahaha……this makes laugh, do you think you really know the constitution of Gambia? If you claimed you do, then i’m afraid that you’ve been fooling the Gambian people for 22 years my man, because if you really claimed you know Gambia’s constitution, you won’t be sitting your very UGLY self down in the people statehouse and refusing to transfer power. Mr. UGLY man, please stepdown on January 19, 2017 ok. I submit! Thanks…..
