Gambia: Opposition Spokesman Responds To Jammeh

Halifa Sallah, opposition spokesman

(JollofNews) –  Halifa Sallah, spokesman of the Gambia’s opposition coalition has again reminded  President Yahya Jammeh that he has got no power under the 1997 Constitution of the Gambia to stop next week’s inauguration of Adama Barrow as the country’s third president.

Mr Jammeh’s mandate is due to expire on January 18th following his surprised defeat in last month’s election by former property developer, Adama Barrow.

The results are being challenge at the supreme court by Mr Jammeh after  initially conceding defeat and praising the country’s electoral system as rigged proof.

Unfortunately for him, the court is unable to hold a hearing until May – as most of the judges come from neighbouring countries – and Mr Jammeh has said he is going nowhere until then.

But Halifa Sallah, spokesman of the opposition coalition said it is neither in line with law nor common sense for a loser to have the right to abrogate or suspend the right of the victor until an election petition is determined.

He said Mr Barrow was declared duly elected by the country’s electoral commission which is empowered by the constitution to hold elections and declare a winner.

“The office of President-elect Barrow has made it absolutely clear that the exercise of the right to file an election petition by the loser does not deprive the winner of the right to prepare for inauguration as president of the republic on 19 January 2017,” Mr Sallah said.

“The constitution states that the person declared elected as president shall take the prescribed oath and assume office on the day the term of office of the incumbent president expires. I think this is very clear.  I think there is no possibility of distortion.

“The status of an election petition should be regarded as a peripheral issue and should, therefore, not hamper any preparation for the inauguration.”

  1. On the 19th is a day for gambia to start a new page whilst every one observing that day very important day.

  2. I come the 19th of January something strange will happen in the Gambia. Wind will blow, the rain of blessing will fall and clean all the dirtiness of Yahya Jammeh from the land and Gambians will be smiling again. May Almighty bless Gambia and His people and may justice prevail.

  3. Jammeh and Obama are both expected to prove their statesmenship on Thursday and Friday respectively. There is no need of proving our usual African ‘primitive’ tag by hesitating or doing anything short of the World’s expectation.

  4. The EVIL kanilai MURDEROUS yaya DEVIL can fowl all it can hallucinate about BUT ONLY for couple of days time; the Gambia WILL BE under President Adama Barrow from January 19 Insha Allah; NOTHING can stop OR reverse that; our FILTHY COWARD kanilai DOG can continue squatting at State House & see; IF anyone is in any doubt January 19 shall determine; Insha Allah…
    Long live the Gambia

  5. Thank you, Mr. Sallah, for your enlightening words.
And let’s remind Mr. Jammeh of this truth:
Even if you came into office by the force of the gun, there’s no reason for you to being forced out of it by guns as well.
Take the offers of an honourable exit, before it is too late!

  7. Adama Barrow fraudulently President elect

Traitors behave just like how Sheriff Bojang and Alieu K Jammeh and others do.
Yahya expect that many of their tribesmen will abandon you, but remain steadfast and reaffirm your position “backward never forward ever. God is ever powerful and Inshallah they will all regret their acts. As the wollof saying goes “Sosseh du sosal ken” they are devillish and only want to see your downfall but they will never live to see that. Note that with their treacherous plans in their defections none will ever survive to see your downfall. It is now clear to you that with all what they were saying in niceties and praise singing they were undermining you just to see your downfall but God the all knowing and everpowerful is and will continue to.protect you from their evil machination. INSHALLAH.
    LONGLIVE YAHYA A.J.J. JAMMEH

  8. Adama Barrow fraudulently President elect

    Hello Fellow Gambian,

I, Adama Barrow Independent Candidate representing the Coalition of eight parties hereby declare that the planned innaugration schuled for 19th January be postponed until when the ruling can be made on Petition filed by the APRC Party.

The reason is, i want to go into office with a clean sheet. If i had known that the self exiled Gambians in the Diaspora had bribed the corrupt IEC Chairman Alieu Momar Njie before December 1st election i would have withdrawn my candidature. Democracy is not about cheating its all about being clean and to clean the mess other people left. On that note i am declaring the scheduled innaugration be halted until further notice. No urge for ascending to the presidency when the peace and tranquility of our beloved Gambia can be endangered.

    Many thanks for your cooperarion.

How typical for a Jammeh supporter to write a spoof letter pretending to be Adama Barrow and think you look anything other than foolish lol!!! The election was fair unlike all of Jammeh’s previous elections which were all rigged. Jammeh is nothing but a spoiled little boy who should be made to sit on the naughty step while the rest of Gambia get on with their new business. I have personally had to send money to family of people held without charge because there was nobody to look after them because of the corrupt Jammeh regime. Did you see any cheating personally? Were you there counting the votes? No of course you weren’t because it did not happen. Why did the President invade the IEC and remove all voting evidence if not to fix it to his advantage? Why did he not seal the building and invite an independent body from another country to go in and assess? Because he is a liar a crook, a bully, a cheat, a thief and he is pure evil. Make your accusations when you have evidence because right now you are just making yourself look pretty damn stupid – you are obviously one of Jammeh’s brainwashed sheep or you are on his payroll – well sheep are the most stupid animals – ask any farmer – they would follow each other over a cliff and hopefully that is what will happen to those like you who can’t see the wood for the trees. #GambiaHasDecided !!!!

  10. Adama Barrow Fraudulently President Elect

    Hello Fellow Gambians,

  12. The WILL and MANDATE of the Gambian people cannot be suspended by one man’s selfish interest to be in power forever. President Elect must be inaugurated to serve in the best and collective interest of the Gambian people. The failed and out-going president will meet his death or imprisonment if he try to stay beyond 19th Jan. 2017. Nigeria will out gun him and bring him to justice if he’s not killed in the cause…..

  13. I now believe that Yaya Jammeh is not a real Gambian. If he thinks that he has done something good for the Gambia by developing in many areas, he is wrong. It was his duty and responsibility to do his job and develop the country.
The Gambia is nobody’s property. Yaya your hands are stained with the blood of innocent people, your pockets are full with illegally earned money, investors cannot come and invest in the Gambia to help those you have oppressed, you are playing time to escape prosecution for your multiple crimes. Yaya I thought you to be a man but you act like a coward.
Hand over power and be ready to face the consequences of your deeds if you are Jola and a real Gambian.
My last advice to you is if you want to die with honor give up power and face justice.
Sadam hussein, Khadafi, Idi Amin, and many more dictators like you died a shameful death hiding in rat wholes, some run away, therefore run away like a goat.
Yaya even your soldiers are disappointed by you. You are alone in your last days.Your wife is afraid of you that is way she is there, but she wished she could go back to her parents where she will be safe.

  14. What are we talking about: Come 19th January 2019, the Nigeria soldiers should go to Banjui and smoke out Jammeh and install Barrow. Period. West Africa has no room for despots like Jammeh in this 21st century. Another IDI AMIN in West Africa? NO.
