(JollofNews) -Gambia’s long-term ruler Yahya Jammeh has finally agreed to relinquish power, President-elect Adama Barrow has announced.
Writing on his on Friday, Mr Barrow said Jammeh would also leave the country. He did not say which country Mr Jammeh will be moving to.
“I would like to inform you that Yahya Jammeh has agreed to step down. He is scheduled to depart Gambia today. #NewGambia,” he tweeted.
Mr Jammeh’s decision to quit follows tense talks that lasted for hours with President Alpha Conde of Guinea and President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz of Mauritania.
Troops from regional groups Ecowas are already in the Gambia and have threatened to flush Mr Jammeh out militarily if he refuses to make way for Mr Barrow.
Mr Barrow, 51, was sworn-in on Thursday as the Gambia’s third president at a ceremony held at the Gambian embassy in Senegal’s capital, Dakar, which was attended by western and African dignitaries.
Very sad day for Gambia if he is allowed to leave and not be held accountable for all the deaths and the wealth he has plundered from Gambia.
Take it easy man, none can Stopp the time. Den Hag can still wait
I agree, and so do many many people,he can’t be allowed to live in comfort after all the bad he has done. He continually spoke about the bad people in uk but he enjoyed the money and stole it for himself
@Stan= He need to leave the country to prevent future disturbances and possible terrorism. Jammeh can always be accounted for anything he did while he is away. Don’t worry about it.
Revenge is cowardly, if you give me blood in return I will give you milk, eye all the politicians are the same or similar. Leave it for the sake of the country, Gambia is an example ,peace and love for Gambia viva Gambia thanks to all Gambians
Yeah! I am Christian and my heart is full of joy!
The Bible says:
Matt.5,38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’[a] 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
Eye for eye…. in the end, it will make us blind!
It is a joke I agree with you, this guy was holding our country to ransom even after his mandate. The other leaders were still begging him, he is just been given the passport to have the last laugh over Gambian’s. They should never let this guy leave the country he should be arrested lock up in mile 2 until his trial date. This was something yaya has done to lot of innocent gambians for decade. He is now laughing all the way to the bank with our resources. It is a travesty he is allowed to have it his way, all this talk from other leaders is not credible to me I think yaya was pulling all the strings. He wants to cause as much damage possible before leaving Gambia. Look at all the military hardware from different countries gambians locked up in their houses. This is what he plans all along. I am really disappointed about the mediators action. I hope they sort this mess out once the dust settled. This is not the end for yaya. Trial awaits for your crimes.
I agree with you
@ the next chapter. I agree
In the end, all that matters is that we are rid of him, he will no longer impede the destined path of the gambia.
They let him go just like that. I can not believe it.
Yaya jammeh just a man with heartless. Known fully well that you will step down but making people to flew from the Gambia, spending their hard earn money to transport their families.
Congratulations to the people of Gambia. Which ever way you look at it, you are the true winners. Gambia is finally free of tyranny, intimidations, assaults, persecutions and death.
I’ll say, good riddance to a very bad rubbish.
Enjoy your new found democracy and freedom. Pray for The Gambia and your brand new president, Adama Barrow.
God bless Gambia and Gambians.
I agree with you.
But, my wife and i still don’t know wether to celebrate. Can we really be sure the monster will leave?
Ftank
@Frank Stenner= I know your feelings after all the zigzags and recent failures for him to step down. I assure you this time he is leaving because he is under absolute pressure and cornered.
I am very proud there as been no bloodshed. This is what makes me proud of being Gambia. We are peace loving people.
I do think that (at a later stage) Yaya and his wife should be held accountable- sell all his assets and return the money to Gambia.
What do you want to bet (sadly) that the moment he gets on the aircraft to leave all the troops guarding his farm will lot it and nothing will go back into the government coffers where the assets originally came from.
I hope the incoming government will set up a team to recover his worldwide wealth and see to it that it returns to Gambia.
One good thing; it appears to be over and you are rid of him!!!
The bless nation n d bless people’ long live the Gambia n long live the people of the Gambia’ prayers av answer
First of all I will thank gambian those who vote to make this change happen. Thanks to coalitions party. Thanks to desporas and a wonderful thanks to senegal and ECOWAS, AU, UN and EU this is what nations can do for another nation when they sees thing is fundamentally wrong . People’s rights and will of the people should not be violated. As we are just a human beings we should respect each other rights, under the rule of law.
@ Tafel= I’m just happy that this will be a warning to all potential dictators. I think it will mark the beginning of true Democray in the Sub-region and the whole of Africa.
One despot, autocratic & tyrannt gone. There remains others in Zimbabwe, Uganda, Cameroon.
We will rally to flush them out once for all people’s rights must be reserved, the will of the people should not be violated. Dictatorships should comes as things of past, law should guide every one anywhere in the world, and that’s what makes us become a decent society, tolerance and productive.
I want to make one more valid point before the chapter is close. We all know it wasn’t the right of way how the transition has been played by jammeh. Our new leader should take all the precautionary measures before entering into the state house, I think it should be destroyed and build a new one. It symbolise bad memories of yaya holding gambians to ransom. I think they should also build something memorial on the late Solo Sandeng’s name. We can never forget heros like him forever. It should be something our future generation can learn from. Now to the soldiers of Gambia and ministers doing the extension of yayas rule to 90 days. They have to be held accountable, there are too many bad apples within them. Lots of land deads, properties and cars and money will be getting sign unto other people’s names to avoid been found that. God bless our nation this chapter is now closed. We will wait and see yaya faith in the future.
@ THE NEXT CHAPTER= Again, I agree with you that The Gambia armed forces need to be purged and parliament dissolved and sack all of them. We should have a fresh parliamentary election, and all of the present ones should be disqualified to contest.
Wonderful. All glory and honour to the Almighty God for answered prayers, no blood shed. Let the monster go to anywhere he can, unless he is in prison otherwise he will yet trouble the Nation where he’s being taking to. He is a Terrorist “Rainbow”. But he will face God’s vengeance soon.
One thing alot of angry people are forgetting, is that the main income for the Gambia is tourism it’s one of the few places in Africa that has never had a war or civil unrest, the industry feeds more than half the nation. What has taken place over the last few days has been terrible for the country if there is a single shot fired during the transfer of power it will ruin the main income that feeds many families. Let’s pray that The Gambia can always boast peace and security and continue to be the smiling coast of Africa. You can never change the past but you can affect the future. Let him go and let’s rebuild our country God and make it somewhere where the whole world wants to visit. God will deal with Jammeh he will not prosper from his crimes. I speak as a victim of his actions and also a big investor in the Gambia. We must do everything we can to keep our reputation as a peaceful country it’s the best commodity Gambia has and anyone who does anything to end that would be harming the same country they claim to love.
Please don’t get me wrong I don’t in any way ignore the atrocities he has committed what I’m saying is going forward we have to protect The Gambia at all costs and put it before all our personal pain and grievances, holiday makers don’t travel to war zones.
@ THE NEXT CHAPTER= I absolutely agree with you that we should take necessary precautions about the State House, and it should be demolished and rebuild. Not only that, but we have to make sure the whole country and particularly Kanilai must be cleared of any future danger to the country
Has he left yet?
All news updates related to this has gone silent.
@Stan= Jammeh is still in The Gambia, but he sign a document with the mediators to leave within 3 days. He will either go to Mouritania or Morocco. But the authorities warn him that if changes his mind within the 3 days, the Ecowas forces will come in to remove him by force. For the time being the Ecowas forces will stay put at the border until he leaves the country. Let’s pray and wait to see if he will not change his mind again.
@Stan= I can confirm to you that Jammeh is leaving this morning Gambia time, he might already left.
First I don’t believe that a single Gambians should loose their life because of an irrelevant inconsequential insecure man, who ultimately prove himself a coward. I commend President Barrow for his wisdom and the entire coalition for realizing that painting Gambia red with the blood of her sons and daughters will leave a devastating effect on the psyche of the nation. The best outcome is letting Yahya go for now and face God and justice at some future date. Lastly the GAF was under serious duress and they made a decision to defend our mother land and not kill to keep Yahya in power. Well done GAF for standing down.
The Gambia armed forces must be purged. Get rid of all the bad ones and retain the rest. Hire fresh young Gambians and train them on how to uphold the constitution and continue to respect human rights and the rule of law. I think if it was not the outside pressure, Jammeh will not move an inch, and some of the armed forces supported him on that.
Yahya in mile 2 for the rest of his life. No need for judging him. Has committed too much evil. Just waste of time and resources. What goes around, comes around. And his gang in the same cell. Just as the song ‘Blowing in the wind ‘ words say….how many …? He is just playing a game and preparing a surprise for everyone . Wait and see.
Very well said, Dr. Sarr. I now have a lot more respect for the GAF.
Just thinking….I wonder how long it will take to reprint the Gambian currency without the face of Yahya on it. I hope sooner rather than later!
At last he has bowed down! He should not be accountable to any benefits,
Big, Big mistake! Why give him 3 days? This just gives him more time to loot the country!
They should put him on a plane with only the clothes on his back!!
I sure hope the incoming president has a team at the airport to see him off so they can strip search him to remove all valuables and all luggage he will have.
@Stan= He might just surprise us again and refused to go. If this happen, then there will be no more option but the Ecowas Forces will get in and removed him by force.
Hi sisters and brothers, brother Jammeh got point there when he said: it does not worth it, meaning we should not kill our peaple and destroy our sweet and best homeland for just gaining worldly material. Mr. Jammeh may The Almighty Allah forgive and protect all of us and continue to make our country the best in the whole of the world. President Conde, president Abdoul Aziz thank you very much. you are the real neighbours of my country. I urge you again my dear brothers and sisters to fast a day and say astaghfirullah on regular basis to thank God The Almighty for the safe exit. I love you all. Your brother in Islam and in humanity Mr. Mohammed Abdourahman Trawally thank you very much.
@Trawally again, none of us wanted a bloodshed and the destruction of our beloved Gambia. This is why we keep mediating to give peace a chance. It was only stubborn Yahya Jammeh who wanted to fight. He should fast for 3 months and ask for forgiveness. There are many Gambians in exile and did not see there families for more than a decade now, i hope they will soon come and see their families.
If it were not for ECOWAS and people who are wiping to stand up to tyranny like a.barrow and lawyer darboe and others we would not have reached here. Far too many gambians were otherwise too afraid to speak, stand up and rise up against such injustice. That lack of expression and effort was injustice itself. I kindly implore all gambians especially with the help of the new government to establish a Gambia where nobody will ever have an excuse for surrendering their rights and security ever again.
I look forward to the day when Gambian President Adama Borrow opens the gates to Mile-2!
And, I hope he reads this!
La Guinee? Oh no! That’s too close to home!! Saudi it is!
When Yaya finished his televised speech tonight with an “Asalamu Alaikum”, I replied “Urro, Cha Bitty! Sasai Bileh, For Hamm Jemm”!! Saudi Arabia, Idi Amin’s adopted home would be a great destination. There he can pray all he wants to his Yallah that he claims to have seen on the mound yet Yaya cannot recite Faatiha off head. The Y’Allah that gave him his World Bank, the cars, the Naa Fulo, Kanilai, and Jongolu (Jaam) in the forms of Ousman Badji, Ousman Sonko, Yankuba Sonko, Yankuba Badji, Yankuba Colley, Fabakary Tombong Jatta, that’s literally a Tombong Fengo, Neti Baldeh and Samsudeen Sarr (Morr Ngacheh).
In Manding, there;s a short prayer that says, “Allah Kana E Buu Bang Kasara Kono” but in Yaya’s case, we will pray that Allah Yeh E Keh Baaro Yitandila Nying Dunyaa Kono, Ayeh E Buu Bang Kasara Kono Fanang”!
The big question that I’d like answered by Yaya’s Bulu to Molu, Ginaar Yunu Gaadu Yi is what really brings them self confidence and fulfillment in life?
Now, all those folks that have been hiding behind the religious cloak can come out in the open, be your real selves and start smelling the roses! Life doesn’t end here!
Join Halifa Sallah’s school of self esteem and confidence to be able to live life to the fullest!
Halifa, I’m not been a big fan of PDOIS but I and many more Gambians are more than willing to meet you part of the way if you’ll agree to take meaningful steps in our direction! All because of what you stand for as a decent human being! It’s become clear that you do whatever you do from the heart. You are the man of the year!!
Kudos to all those that have had numerous sleepless nights and BELLEH RUN on account of Yaya Jammeh’s antics!! Good riddance, I’d say. Hey Dida Halake, tell Yaya that Gann Du Yewi Beye! :-)) :-))
Allah subhana watala guide and protect this country the gambia. We pray for coalition and all the supporters who have voted for and for those who did not vote for coalition. We join hands together and work for better Gambia
