(JollofNews) – Authorities in the Gambia yesterday ordered the immediate closure of two Christian missionary schools in the country for ‘failing to allow the teaching of Islamic education’.
Brikama Methodist Upper Basic and Senior Secondary School and Longman Memorial Lower Basic School, which are one of the top schools in the country were ordered to cease operation by Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education without prior warning.
Although the two schools are Christian schools, the government said their failure to include the Islamic teachings in their curriculum for Muslim students contravenes the laws of the Gambia.
The Jammeh regime said several attempts were made by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education to ‘ensure adherence to national education regulations in both schools’.
The principals of the two schools were not available for comment but sources said the decision has shocked many parents especially those whose children are in their final year.
