The Abubacarr Jawara Foundation has donated 2,000 bags of rice to Muslim communities across The Gambia as part of its annual Ramadan outreach, continuing a philanthropic tradition that dates back nearly two decades.
The donation, valued at D2.5 million, was officially handed over at a ceremony in Yundum. The foundation’s initiative is spearheaded by Gambian businessman Abubacarr Jawara, Chief Executive Officer of GACH Global.
Speaking at the event, Essa Jawara said the gesture reflects a long-standing commitment to supporting vulnerable families during the holy month. He noted that despite his demanding business schedule, Abubacarr Jawara has consistently prioritised assistance to those in need, particularly during Ramadan, when the act of giving carries deep spiritual significance for Muslims.
“This is about remembering the less fortunate and sharing what we have,” he said, adding that the foundation’s charity work is rooted in the values instilled by Jawara’s late parents, who were widely respected for their generosity and service to their community.
Prominent Islamic scholars also commended the initiative. Imam Abdoulie Fatty praised Jawara’s consistency over the years and prayed for continued blessings and success in his endeavours. Imam Chebou Cham highlighted the importance of staple foods such as rice and sugar during Ramadan, describing the timing of the donation as both thoughtful and impactful.
“Every head of household is concerned about how to provide rice and sugar for the family during Ramadan,” Imam Cham said. “Providing these essentials at such a time is highly commendable.”

Yusupha Jawara reaffirmed the foundation’s intention to sustain the annual programme, which began in 2006. He expressed confidence that the gesture would continue to attract divine reward and community goodwill.
For many families across the country, the distribution is expected to ease the financial pressure that often accompanies Ramadan, a period marked by fasting, prayer and communal solidarity.

Over the years, the Abubacarr Jawara Foundation has built a reputation for consistent charitable engagement, particularly during key religious periods. This latest donation further cements its standing as one of the country’s most visible philanthropic actors, with a focus on dignity, faith and community support.
