Darboe Declares Intention To Become UDP Torch-Bearer In 2026

The secretary-general and leader of the UDP on Wednesday declared his intention to run for President in 2026.

Lawyer Ousainou Darboe said he would submit his name for consideration when the UDP opens its selection process for a flagbearer.

“I intend to put forward my candidature for the Party’s flagbearer position,” Darboe said. “If and when the UDP does me the honour to select me, I will run a robust, facts-based and issues-focused campaign to convince Gambians that the UDP and its potential allies are the only choice to replace the corrupt and insensitive NPP government.”

While the announcement was part of a broader message calling for unity within the party, it is expected to sharpen internal discussions about succession and the party’s readiness to compete in 2026. Darboe, who has led the UDP since its formation in 1996, remains a towering figure in Gambian opposition politics but also faces growing calls for generational change from some within the party.

The statement did not suggest any changes to the party’s selection process, with Darboe reaffirming that the UDP would follow its rules and procedures in choosing a candidate. Still, his early declaration signals that he is not ready to pass the baton just yet, despite mounting internal and public speculation about potential successors.

The announcement comes at a time of heightened tension within the party, following days of public disagreement among members and supporters. In the same statement, Darboe urged restraint and called for unity, warning that disunity could damage the party’s chances ahead of the election.
