It’s no longer a rumour that Ebrima Dibba was one of Lawyer Ousainou Darboe’s trusted people, who were behind Talib Bensouda’s UDP flagbearer bid, as Dibba himself admitted in a leaked audio that he wanted Darboe to hand over the baton to Talib.
There were speculations that Dibba, who is a senior member of the UDP, could wave the country’s main opposition party goodbye following the string of resignation of the party’s senior officials of late.
Dibba did not say whether he would also call it quits, but he suggested that the UDP’s electoral prospect under Hon. Darboe’s leadership is bleak.
“The UDP supporters, you wish to remain in opposition till the world ends or you wish to change a government so that life can be liveable for the people because the reason why you reached out to me on the phone, soliciting a bail-out is because things are tough, big man,” Dibba said in a firm but calm tone.
Dibba said he opted for Bensouda because of his track record as a mayor, who was given two mandates and is adored by the people.
“I insist that let’s make a change that can put us in a better stead of winning with whoever, even if the person just joined us. The one you gave two mandates to as a mayor and is loved by the people, my opinion is that let’s allow that person to lead,” he stated.
Dibba believed that some UDP members were trying to subject him to persecution of opinion and perspective.
“Does my expression of that opinion make me an infidel?” he asked, adding: “Those of you in the party, touting democracy, yet you are averse to people expressing their opinion. I am not that type of a son. No. If I think that when we select someone and he will deliver us the outcome we all desire and we’ll all succeed, if that makes me an infidel, then that’s that because my opinion would not be suppressed. To say let us allow someone else to lead us should not be a catastrophe but I think people already have a catastrophe brewing in them.”
