The community of Mbollet Ba was on Thursday sent into consternation and shock when a three-year-old disabled girl was killed after a swarm of bees went on a rampage in a particular part of the village, stinging children that were playing around.
Mariama Jallow was among the children that were stung by the marauding bees and she succumbed to bee sting at the Essau District Hospital, where she was medically evacuated.
Mariama’s tragic death is a stark reminder of the need for extra and special care for people with disabilities. As a physically-challenged person, Mariama could not run to safety when her playmates did and there was no-one around to save her from the vicious bee attack.
The Vice Chairman of the Mbollet Ba Village Development Committee (VDC), Abdoulie Jallow, explained to JollofNews that the bees had their hive just behind his compound, which is located just after the compound of the late chief of Lower Niumi Alhaji Tabora Manneh in the intersection of Kanuma and Mbollet Ba.
“The bees went on the rampage, stinging the kids that were playing around while I was on my farm. Upon receiving the information, I rushed home and found out that the stung kids were rushed to the Essau District Hospital for treatment. Almost all the kids received medical care and were discharged, except Mariama Jallow, who passed away in her hospital bed at the Essau District Hospital,” further explained the Mbollet Ba VDC vice chair. “Mariama is handicapped and when the bees started to sting the kids, they ran away and left her behind.”
Efforts were underway to cut down the tree the bees called home.
