A young Gambian man who was injured during Monday’s violent protest in Faraba Banta Village, Kombo East District, has died of his wounds.
Amadou Jallow also known locally as Amadou Nyang, died on Tuesday night at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital, Banjul, were he was being treated with several other injured villagers.
He is the third person to die of bullet wounds fire by armed riot officers.
Bakary Kujabi and Ismaila Bah died on Monday after riot police fired live ammunition at a crowd of villagers protesting against sand mining in the village.
The Inspector General of Police has denied giving orders for the officers to use live ammunition against the villagers and has vowed to come down heavily against those responsible. And as investigations into the incident continues, five police officers including a superintendent and an assistant superintendent have been arrested for their role in the shooting.
Six villagers namely; Ousman Jassey, Sunkaru Jarju, Bakary Badjie, Salifu Darboe and Modou Kujabi are currently detained for taking part in the protest and efforts are currently underway to grant them bail.
In light of the heavy casualties and the crossing of a REDLINE, IGP Kinteh and Interior Minister Mballow must resign their post. That is the only way credibility in this case can be re-instated.
1 death in such circumstances is unacceptable. 3 deaths is a emergency situation and requires extraordinary measures to hold institutions and direct political leaders accountable.
Another sad news, a young man died very disturbing, but I hope the investigation will pave the way out and help us to understand what when wrong, this is why I remain calm till I have the facts before any judgment. Justice will come heavy on this matters.
