The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) have embarked on a new chapter of international military cooperation with the launch of a six-week joint pre-deployment training program, conducted in partnership with a Mobile Training Team from Bangladesh.
The program, which officially began on October 13, 2025, at the Gambia Armed Forces Training School (GAFTS) in Fajara, aims to prepare the country’s Quick Reaction Force One (QRF-1) for deployment under United Nations peacekeeping operations.
The initiative underscores a growing partnership between The Gambia and Bangladesh two nations with long-standing commitments to global peace and stability. Bangladesh, renowned for its extensive contributions to UN peacekeeping missions, has dispatched a specialised team of instructors to The Gambia to share tactical knowledge, operational experience, and logistical expertise.
A “Win-Win” Strategic Partnership
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Major Abdoulie Secka, Commandant of GAFTS, described the training as a “win-win” initiative that strengthens both nations’ shared commitment to peace and international security.
“This strategic alliance not only provides us with essential resources and deployment opportunities but also lays the foundation for long-term capacity building within the GAF,” Major Secka said. He urged participants to approach the program with discipline and determination, stressing that mastery of UN peacekeeping standards was critical for success in volatile operational environments.
Enhancing Operational Readiness
Colonel Sahriar, head of the Bangladeshi Mobile Training Team, reaffirmed his team’s dedication to supporting The Gambia’s growing role in international peace operations.
“We are not just here to share knowledge, but to help elevate the operational readiness of Gambian troops,” he said, emphasizing the importance of professionalism in peacekeeping roles. Quoting international peacekeeping expert Mr. Dato Hamason, Colonel Sahriar noted, “Peacekeeping is a soldier’s job, but only a soldier can do it.”
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Representing the Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier General Yaya Drammeh hailed the collaboration as a milestone in The Gambia’s defense diplomacy and a testament to the enduring friendship between Banjul and Dhaka.
“This joint training initiative not only strengthens The Gambia’s capacity for global deployment but also builds a lasting bond of friendship and cooperation between our two nations,” he stated.
Preparing for Global Peace Missions
The six-week program will focus on key aspects of UN peacekeeping, including tactical readiness, conflict management, humanitarian coordination, and the protection of civilians. Upon completion, members of QRF-1 are expected to join upcoming UN missions, contributing to The Gambia’s growing reputation as a reliable peacekeeping partner on the world stage.
The Gambia Armed Forces continue to play an active role in international peace efforts, with Gambian troops currently serving in several UN missions across Africa. This latest collaboration with Bangladesh not only enhances operational competence but also reinforces The Gambia’s steadfast commitment to upholding peace, security, and human dignity across the globe.
