More than 40 officers of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) received new ranks in a formal decoration ceremony held Friday, at Defence Headquarters in Banjul. The event marked a significant moment for the officers and their families, celebrating years of hard work, discipline, and service.
The ceremony was attended by a wide range of high-profile guests, including Defence Minister Brigadier General (Rtd) Sering Modou Njie, Chief of Defence Staff Lieutenant General Mamat O.A. Cham, senior government officials, and representatives from sister security agencies.
Promoted officers ranged from newly commissioned Second Lieutenants to Lieutenant Colonels. For many, it was a long-awaited recognition of their efforts and dedication to duty.
In his keynote speech, Minister Njie thanked President Adama Barrow for endorsing the promotions, calling it a clear show of confidence in the Armed Forces.
“This reflects the President’s strong belief in the institution and his commitment to seeing it grow professionally,” Njie said. He encouraged the officers to wear their new ranks with a sense of responsibility and to continue upholding the values of discipline and service.
CDS Cham echoed that message, telling the newly promoted officers that leadership isn’t just about authority—it’s about earning trust.
“Your men and women will look to you for guidance. Lead by example, and never forget the oath you took to serve this country with honor,” he said.
General Cham also acknowledged the role of the PROMEX Board, led by Deputy CDS Major General Ousman Gomez, and the GAF Training School, for maintaining rigorous selection and training standards. He pointed out that strong leadership starts with strong preparation.
He went on to highlight ongoing reforms within the Armed Forces, including efforts to revise the Terms and Conditions of Service (TACOS), improve troop welfare, and modernize military infrastructure and equipment.
“We’re building a force that is ready, capable, and committed to its mission. And that starts with the kind of leadership we’re recognising today,” Cham added.
The event was not just a formality—it was a morale boost for the institution. Families and friends of the officers beamed with pride as they pinned new badges and stripes onto their loved ones. Applause echoed across the courtyard after each name was called.
Also in attendance were the Minister of Petroleum, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, the National Security Adviser, and retired senior officers of the GAF—many of whom have played a role in shaping the careers of those promoted.
For the officers stepping into new leadership roles, the ceremony marked a turning point—a moment of pride, but also a reminder of the work still ahead.
