Gambia: Ex-President Jammeh’s Brothers Questioned

Ex-President Yahya Jammeh

(JollofNews)- Three brothers of Gambia’s former long-term ruler Yahya Jammeh are being questioned by Gambian authorities.

Araba Jammeh, Jalamang Jammeh and Sainey Jammeh all of Kanilai Village were questioned on Wednesday by detectives at the police headquarters in Banjul for several hours.

The men were first questioned at the police station in Bwiam for several hours before being asked to voluntarily report to the police headquarters where they were again questioned.

Police said the Jammeh brothers have not been arrested or detained.

“They were invited to the police  headquarters  for questioning with regards to certain information investigators need to know,” said police spokesman Foday Conta.

Unlike other developed countries, Gambian security officers can invite people for questioning at various security posts without informing them what they are being summoned for.

Also people who are being questioned can be kept in custody for hours or several days without the right to a lawyer and cannot give a no comment interview.

Human right groups have catalogued reports were suspects have revealed that they were tortured and forced into making confessions by police and other security officers.

Until the demise of the Jammeh regime in January, the Jammeh brothers were untouchable.

And while they have not been accused of any rights abuse which has characterised their brother’s 22-year rule, they were revered by people in their community.

  1. For what it’s worth; I was friends with one of Mr Jammeh’s brothers over several years. He was a sergeant in the GAF. He did two tours in Darfur and it was noticeable how his character changed upon his return. He became a very quiet and reflective man and spoke with poignancy at what he had witnessed in Darfur. He invited me to his home occupied by his wife and children and The President’s Mother.
His Mother didn’t speak much english but she was a very charming and humble lady with a keen sense of Gambian humour. I recall the children kept rubbing my skin to see if it was black underneath. I am a very pale toubab.

The house was guarded by two armed state guards. You could not say they lived in luxury. Or were advantaged. I was quite surprised at the poor standard of living compared to other Gambians I knew. I had commissioned a fine Gambian outfit for myself. When he saw it , he liked it immensely. I gave it to him as a present/ He wore it to the naming ceremony of ex President Jammeh’s second child.
    A very humble Gambian family.

  2. Look like all Jollas in trouble because of Jammeh , what about the Mandikas and others who served Jammeh government??? Heroes !!!

That day even our granfathers in their graves will know that Jolas have rise up against a nasty Regime. Neither Monkey Sall nor Trio Ecowas State can stop the Jolas. Is coming soon and nowhere to run. Will be hotter than the Lava

  4. @Is Da Reality, have i read your post properly? did i just see you write the nonsense by Barrow government and that jolas will rise and is shall be hotter than lava? is this a threat or what? does anyone need to be reminded of the broad daylight injustice jammeh metted at other tribes in the Gambia especially mandinkas? are you for real? the segregation, his stupid efforts of instigating tribal clashes for which he was ignored by all wise men of our motherland, the blatant insults, above all the foolish baffoon openly laid it bare in the open for anyone who cares to see or listen (for he was not worth any person’s time). you come on this forum with this cheap talk, like i said before some of us are trying hard to heal, so could thinkers otherwise let us be please. if and when jolas come hotter than lava, i bet there will and can be an unexpected anti dote to that effect. i will leave you to imagine what that could be for now but trust me let’s wait until we get to that bridge, the hot molten lava shall be dealt with accordingly.
