Gambia Gov’t Maintains Fertilizer Price At D1100

Despite last year’s poor performance of the groundnut crop, The Gambia government has maintained the retail price of a bag of fertilizer at D1100.

Also last year, fertilizer was sold to groundnut farmers at D1100, but yields dropped significantly, hugely affecting their income statuses.

Many peanut farmers rely heavily on groundnut cultivation to sustain their families.

It was the predominant feeling in the farming community that the loss of yields that they’ve suffered the previous year will reflect on this year’s fertilizer price.

However, the Deputy Managing Director of the Gambia Groundnut Cooperation (GGC), Mr. Lamin Sanyang, told Star Tv Wake Up Gambia morning show on Friday that fertilizer is imported in dollars, suggesting that the government can do very little or nothing under the circumstances in the face of the vulnerability of the dalasi to the dollar.
