Gambia Ranks Among World’s Top Tourism Performers In 2025, UN Report Shows

The Gambia has been named one of the fastest-growing tourism destinations in the world, securing fourth place globally in the latest report from the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UN Tourism).

The country recorded an impressive 46 percent increase in international tourist arrivals during the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.

The report, released this week, highlights a remarkable global recovery in tourism, with several developing countries especially in South America and Africa leading the way. Paraguay topped the list with a staggering 53 percent rise in visitor numbers, followed by Brazil and Chile, each at 48 percent.

Gambia’s strong showing placed it ahead of popular destinations such as Japan, Vietnam, Israel, and Egypt, cementing its growing appeal among global travellers. The country’s blend of warm hospitality, unspoiled beaches, wildlife parks, and rich cultural heritage has made it increasingly attractive to tourists seeking authentic, affordable travel experiences.

The UN Tourism report used data collected up to May 2025, focusing on destinations that submitted full statistics for January and February. While the figures represent year-on-year percentage growth, the report cautioned that some countries, including Israel and Palau, are still operating below pre-pandemic levels, which may inflate percentage gains. Gambia, however, has shown steady recovery over the past two years and is closing in on its 2019 arrival numbers.

Overall, global tourism saw a five percent increase in the first quarter of 2025 compared to 2024, exceeding pre-pandemic levels by three percent. International arrivals are expected to reach 300 million by the end of Q1—up 14 million from last year.

Africa registered the highest regional growth, with a nine percent increase in tourist arrivals, reflecting renewed interest in the continent’s diverse offerings. Asia and the Pacific followed with 13 percent growth, although the region is still recovering its full capacity. Meanwhile, the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East posted more modest gains between one and three percent.

International tourism revenues hit a record $2 trillion globally 15 percent above pre-pandemic levels despite inflation, currency fluctuations, and geopolitical tensions affecting parts of the world.

In North Africa, Morocco and Egypt also featured in the top ten, ranking ninth and tenth, respectively. Morocco reported a 22 percent rise in arrivals, while Egypt posted a 21 percent increase.

Gambia’s performance stands out not just regionally but globally, signalling a shift in global travel trends toward smaller, experience-driven destinations. With its peaceful atmosphere, friendly people, and ever-growing tourism infrastructure, the country is well-placed to continue attracting visitors throughout 2025 and beyond.

As the high season approaches later this year, tourism officials and industry players in The Gambia will be looking to build on this momentum highlighting the Smiling Coast as a welcoming and vibrant destination for all.
