Gambia To Push For Global Unity, Palestine Ceasefire At UN General Assembly

The Gambia will use this year’s United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to call for stronger international cooperation and a ceasefire in Palestine, according to its Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Lamin B. Dibba.

Speaking ahead of the annual gathering in New York, Ambassador Dibba described the 2025 session as “special,” noting that it coincides with the 80th anniversary of the UN. He said the theme “Better Together: 80 years and more for peace, development, and human rights” reflects The Gambia’s foreign policy and its longstanding commitment to multilateralism.

“The challenges facing the global community are too complex for any single nation to address alone,” Dibba said, stressing that the Assembly is a call for unity among nations.

The Gambian delegation is led by Vice President Muhammad B.S. Jallow, who is expected to deliver the country’s national statement. Ambassador Dibba said the Vice President’s address will highlight Gambia’s democratic gains and underscore its determination to remain a credible voice for good governance and human rights.

A major highlight of The Gambia’s role at this year’s Assembly is its current chairmanship of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) a first in the country’s history. Dibba said this leadership position will allow The Gambia to contribute more actively to discussions on peace and stability, particularly in the Middle East.

On the crisis in Palestine, Dibba confirmed that The Gambia will join the growing global call for a ceasefire. “This firm position demonstrates The Gambia’s active and unwavering role in advocating for peace and stability,” he said.

The Gambia has built a reputation as a strong voice for peace at the UN, and its chairmanship of the OIC gives it added weight on issues affecting the Muslim world. With a focus on democratic progress at home and peace-building abroad, the country is expected to play a more visible role on the international stage during this year’s Assembly.
